China Internet Development Report 2020: Artificial intelligence patent applications become world’s first

On November 23, the "China Internet Development Report 2020" compiled by the China Cyberspace Research Institute was released at the World Internet Conference and Internet Development Forum in Wuzhen, Zhejiang. The report pointed out that China's network information technology has gradually strengthened its independent and controllable technology capabilities, 5G, operating system and other technologies have made breakthroughs. The number of artificial intelligence patent applications has surpassed the United States for the first time, becoming the world's first.

The report pointed out that in the past year, China has firmly grasped the historical opportunities, accelerated the vigorous development of the Internet information industry, and continuously accelerated the construction of network infrastructure. The construction of new infrastructures such as 5G networks and data centers has developed rapidly.

Among them, China's 5G technology is world-leading, and the number of patent applications is obvious. Huawei ranks first, and ZTE ranks third. According to statistics, from 2020, one-third of the global 5G network will come from Chinese technology.

The report shows that in 2019, the number of artificial intelligence patent applications surpassed the United States for the first time, becoming the world's first, with a total of 110,000 patent applications.

2020 will be a great year in the development process of China and the world. The sudden Covid-19 epidemic poses severe challenges to the national governance system and governance capabilities, and it is a comprehensive test of the capacities of China's digital technology and digital economy development.

The report stated that the new generation of information technologies such as data, artificial intelligence, and 5G had played a critical role in responding to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic, promoting the resumption of work and school, ensuring people's work and life, and accelerating economic recovery and growth.

"For example, big data technology can help relevant departments understand and accurately grasp the epidemic situation in real-time; artificial intelligence covers intelligent diagnosis, body temperature detection, etc.; artificial intelligence algorithms are used for virus gene sequencing, new drug research and development, etc." said China Cyberspace Research Institute, director of the Informationalization Institute, Zou Xiaoxiang said.

In addition, while government services such as "health codes" and "communication big data itinerary cards" have made significant contributions to epidemic prevention and control, the explosive growth of new formats such as webcasting has also met the daily needs of netizens during the epidemic. As of June 2020, the number of live broadcast users in China has reached 562 million.

"The Covid-19 epidemic has changed the shape of economic globalization, but the general trend of globalization has not changed. As an important force in global scientific and technological innovation, China has continuously explored ways to govern cyberspace in terms of information technology, digital economy, network security, and network content. Improve governance mechanisms, policies and capabilities, and contribute experience and plans to global Internet governance." said Li Yuxiao, vice president of China Cyberspace Research Institute.
