China has reached 15.2 invention patents per 10,000 people

As of the end of October 2020, China has 15.2 invention patents per 10,000 people. Previous official data showed that as of the end of June 2020, China had 14.3 patents per 10,000 population.

According to the China National Intellectual Property Administration, China’s intellectual property creation, protection, and application are being comprehensively strengthened. In terms of intellectual property creation, the number of invention patent applications ranked first in the world for nine consecutive years. In 2019, the number of China’s PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) International patent applications reached 58,900, ranking first in the world; as of the end of October this year, China had 15.2 invention patents per 10,000 population; of the world’s 5,000 leading brands, China accounted for 408, with a total value of 1.6 trillion US dollars, among which nine brands rank among the top 25 in the world. In terms of intellectual property protection, China has implemented strict protection, large-scale protection, fast protection, and unified protection. The social satisfaction of intellectual property protection has increased from 68.72 points in 2015 to 78.98 points in 2019, an increase of more than 10 points. In terms of the use of intellectual property rights, China's national patent-intensive industries in 2018 reached 10.71 trillion yuan in added value, exceeding the 10 trillion yuan mark, and their contribution to GDP growth reached 15.7%; the amount of patent and trademark pledge financing increased from 84.85 billion yuan in 2015 in the country’s total was increased to 151.5 billion yuan in 2019, nearly doubled.

In addition, in 2019, the transaction volume of technology contracts involving intellectual property in China reached 928.69 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 137.7%; the export value of intellectual property royalties reached 45.45 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 23.6%, and the goal of the 13th Five-Year Plan of the intellectual property rights were completed two years in advance; the output value of geographical indications exceeds RMB 1 trillion, which has become an effective way for many places to develop characteristic economies and implement targeted poverty alleviation.
