Chile’s Proposal to join the Protocol Relating to the Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Trademarks entered legislative process

On December 2, 2020, Chile’s Proposal to join the Protocol Relating to the Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Trademarks entered the first stage of the legislative process. The proposal drafted by the Chilean National Institute of Industrial Property (INAPI) and the Chilean Ministry of Economy will benefit Chilean Small and Medium-sized Enterprises who wish to enter the international market. Loreto, Director of INAPI Loreto Bresky and Director of Chilean Minister of Economy Lucas Palacios. The motivation to promote this initiative is to help Chilean companies build more international brands. If the above proposal can be finally passed, then with the help of the Madrid system, Chilean applicants in the future only need to submit a single trademark registration application in one language (Spanish, French or English) at INAPI in order to be able to register, and seek protection for their trademarks in many intellectual property systems in different countries or regions. For Loreto Bresky, joining the Madrid system will bring unprecedented opportunities for Chile. He said: “Chile entrepreneurs will become more successful in exploring the international market and registering their own brands. It should be pointed out that for those Chilean trademarks that have been registered in foreign countries, 80% of them are being protected in countries or regions that have already entered the Protocol of the Madrid Agreement. Therefore, we have high expectations for Chilean companies that voluntarily use this system and can promote local economic development, and these companies will also get more benefits. "

It is reported that the Foreign Relations Committee of the House of Representatives of the Chilean Parliament will review the above proposal.
