Recently, the Chinese Academy of Press and Publication has completed the survey report of the Economic Contribution of China’s Copyright Industries in 2019, which shows the added value of copyright industries reached CNY 7.32 trillion in 2019, a rise of 10.34% year-on-year, and accounted for 7.39% of GDP, up by 0.02% over 2018. The share of copyright industries in the national economy rises steadily, revealing that the scale of industry further expands.
During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, the National Copyright Administration of China (NCAC) and local copyright administrative departments fully implemented the decisions and arrangements of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, and promoted the high-quality development of copyright industries by adopting legislative, policy and administrative tools. From 2016 to 2019, the industy added value increased from CNY 5.46 trillion to CNY 7.32 trillion, with an increase of 34% in industrial scale; in terms of economic contribution, the share of the industy added value in GDP increased from 7.33% in 2016 to 7.39% in 2019, up by 0.06%, recording a trend of yearly increase. The annual growth rate of the industry added value averaged 10.3% between 2016 and 2019, 0.4 % higher than that of GDP (9.9%) in the same period. As a new engine of innovation-driven development, copyright industries have significantly contributed to the optimization and upgrading of economic structure and added “copyright impetus” to the high-quality economic development.
According to the report, with the deepening of supply-side structural reform in China, the core copyright industries, including press and publication, radios, films and television, software, advertisment and design industry, quicken their digital transformation and thus develop rapidly, apparently taking the lead in copyright industries. In 2019, the added value of core copyright industries reached CNY 4.59 trillion with a rise of 10% year-on-year, and accounted for 63% of that of the copyright industries.
The steady growth of China’s copyright industries has greatly helped advance stability on the six fronts (employment, the financial sector, foreign trade, foreign and domestic investments, and expectations) and security in the six areas (employment, basic livelihood, market entities, food and energy, industrial and supply chains, and local government operation). In 2019, there were 16.286 million urban employees in copyright industries, accounting for 9.49% of the urban employees nationwide. The foreign trade of copyright industries keeps stable while improves its quality, with merchandise exports of USD 365.33 billion in 2019, accounting for 14.62% of the national total (actually above 11% for many years in a row).
