China Leading Filer of Blockchain and AI Patents, Says Report
Based on the numbers of scientific publications and WIPO PCT international patent applications published between 2012 and 2016. China ranked fifth. The ranking is part of the Global Innovation Index 2018, which provides detailed metrics about the innovation performance of 126 countries and economies around the world. Scientific publishing: 197,175 scientific publications, of which 23.5% by Chinese Academy of Sciences. The main field of science was chemistry, which made up 10.6% of publications. Patents: 18,041 international patent applications filed, of which 21.1% by BOE Technology Group. The main field of technology was digital communication, which made up 25.5% of all filings.

Chinese pharmaceutical major Luye Pharma Group Ltd announced on January 16 that it had signed an agreement with AstraZeneca China for the latter to have exclusive rights to promote its Xuezhikang capsule medicine in the Chinese mainland. According to the agreement, Luye Pharma will retain the asset rights, commercial sales rights, the registration permit, all intellectual property rights and other product-related rights, aside from product promotion rights. The cooperation signifies increasing recognition of Chinese patent medicine and will promote such medicines' image internationally as drugs suitable for disease treatment, instead of simply being healthcare supplements, said Yu Zhibin, traditional Chinese medicine department director with the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Medicine and Health Products. He also said more and more foreigners now turn to Chinese patent medicines, because of efforts from the Chinese authorities and pharmaceutical companies to promote TCM, and to prove TCM can reliably treat and prevent disease, through scientific research. However, there is still a long way ahead for Chinese patent medicines to be widely accepted and acknowledged around the world, not only because foreigners are largely not aware of TCM culture and theories, but also because it is difficult to register Chinese patent medicines under Western-style new drug registration systems.

Chinese companies were the leading filers of blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI) patents at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2017, according to figures published by accountancy firm UHY Hacker Young. The survey was published on January 21. A total of 314 blockchain patents were filed with WIPO in 2017, 99 of them by Chinese businesses. US companies were the second most prolific, filing 92 blockchain patents. Blockchain research firm Chain, with offices in London and Vancouver, was the single biggest filer, with 48. Chinese companies also led the way in filing new AI patents with WIPO, accounting for 473 out of the 649 applications made to WIPO in 2017. Baidu, a Chinese company which operates the world’s second largest search engine after Google, applied for 183. According to Tsinghua University in Beijing, Chinese research institutes account for more AI patents than domestic businesses. The report, published last year, estimated that the value of China’s AI industry increased by 67% in 2017 to reach RMB 23.7 billion ($3.5 billion). The US and South Korea followed behind China, with 65 and 41 patents respectively.
