On January 22, Commissioner Shen Changyu of China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) met with a delegation of World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) led by Deputy Director General John Sandage in Beijing. Shen Changyu introduced to the delegation on the latest development of China's IP cause, reviewed the important cooperation between CNIPA and WIPO, and expressed his wish for the two sides to deepen cooperation and make more fruitful achievements in the future. John Sandage conveyed the New Year greetings of Director General Francis Gurry of WIPO to CNIPA. He remarked that WIPO expects to deepen cooperation with CNIPA, and in particular, strengthen communication in fields of organization of international conferences, IP arbitration and mediation as well as PCT. During the visit of John Sandage, Deputy Commissioner He Zhimin of CNIPA made in-depth exchanges with him concerning specific matters related to cooperation in the field of PCT. It is learnt that during his stay in China, John Sandage will also visit the Patent Examination Cooperation Hubei Center of the Patent Office, CNIPA, as well as PCT users in Beijing and Wuhan.

The US Department of Justice (DoJ) has filed criminal charges against Chinese telecoms manufacturer Huawei, which is accused of stealing trade secrets from US competitors. Huawei is facing 23 criminal charges, including accusations that it operated a rewards system for employees to incentivise the theft of trade secrets. The company is also alleged to have stolen robotic parts from T-Mobile US. The indictment comes amid growing tensions between the US and China over trade and alleged IP theft by Chinese companies. Chinese officials have labelled the charges as “unfair and immoral”. In a press conference in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang told reporters that the charges were an attempt to “mobilise state power to blacken the names of and crack down on specific companies”. “We urge the US to stop its unjustifiable bashing on Chinese enterprises, including Huawei”, he added. Delegations from the American and Chinese governments met on January 30 to continue talking over a new trade deal that could resolve the dispute. IP issues have reportedly proved a major stumbling block in the negotiations.
