Will 'robots build houses' revolutionize the construction industry?

The construction industry is a pillar industry of China's national economy, accounting for about 26% of China's GDP. China has the world's largest construction market, with the value of contracts signed in the country's construction industry reaching 5.9557.7 trillion yuan in 2020, up 9.3 percent year on year.

However, the traditional construction industry is facing big but not excellent challenges, especially under the influence of the COVID-19 epidemic, the traditional construction mode of the construction industry has been greatly impacted, and the extensive development mode has been unable to continue.

Under this background, the construction industry is in urgent need of finding a new breakthrough. "Digital transformation is an important way to promote high-quality development of the construction industry," said Liu Jinzhang, vice president of China Construction Industry Association. "It is an inevitable trend for the development of China's construction industry to move from 'Made in China' to 'Intelligent Made in China.'"

By the end of February 2021, the team of Primus Forest is researching nearly 50 construction robots and intelligent products, 18 of which have been put into commercial application. At present, Bozhilin has formed 12 construction robot product lines, such as concrete construction, concrete dressing, bricklaying and plastering, and interior wall decoration.

Zhang Bo, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and director of the Institute of Artificial Intelligence at Tsinghua University, said Country Garden "has led the country and even the world in the field of intelligent construction and construction robots."

In Yang's opinion, robots are the only choice to transform the traditional construction industry, whether considering efficiency, quality, safety or cost. As a construction worker, he has expressed his expectations for intelligent construction on many occasions. "In the past, workers walked around on the site, but in the future, robots walked around on the site. We produce our houses on the site just like we produce cars".

Since the 18th CPC National Congress, China has deeply implemented the innovation-driven development strategy, placed scientific and technological innovation at the core of the country's overall development, and brought robotics and intelligent manufacturing into the priority areas of national scientific and technological innovation, vigorously promoting the development and industrialization of robot science and technology. In this year's government work report, it is also clearly proposed that during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, we should accelerate digital development, create new advantages of digital economy, and jointly promote digital industrialization and industrial digital transformation.

Now, the dream of building houses by robots is becoming a reality, and the transformation of traditional construction has only just begun.
