The chart above shows the changes in the number of applications, reviews, authorizations and settlement ofpatents in India over the past five years. It can be seen that the number of closed cases in 2017-18 and 2018-19 is basically the same as the number of applications in the previous years. The previous case squeeze has been eliminated, and the licensing cycle forpatents in India has been shortened to about four years.

As can be seen from the chart above, the number ofpatent applications in India shows a fluctuating upward trend within a 10-year period. This suggests that Chinese high-tech companies face more challenges from international competitors when entering the Indian market than their local rivals.

Invention applications for PCTs entering the national stage in India have been relatively stable, but given the huge size of the Indian market, it is expected that this situation will break down soon as the business environment in India improves.

 

4. Rankings of the number of PCTs entering the national stage in India in 2018-19 - Country

In 2018-19, the number of PCTs that have entered the national stage in India, ranked by country, is the United States, Japan, China, Germany, South Korea, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Switzerland and France. Among them, 2,601 applications came from China.

 

5. Ranking of the number of PCTs entering the National Phase in India in 2018-19 - Applicants

In 2018-19, the number of PCTs that have entered the National Phase in India, ranked by applicants, are Qualcomm, Samsung, Huawei, Ericsson, Oppo, Philips, Honda, Toyota, Mitsubishi, BASF. Among them, Huawei and Oppo from China made the top 10 list.

Direct application refers to the case of direct application without claiming priority, while the Paris Convention route application is the case of claiming priority. Compared with the former two means, the way of PCT entering the national stage is the most common way for major countries to apply for Indianpatent.

Among the 9 fields of Chemical, pharmaceutical, Computer/ Electronics, Communication, Electrical, physical Physics, bio-medical, Mechanical, Polymer Science & Technology, Polymer, chemistry, Electrical and Communication are the top four fields in terms of application quantity. It has a certain Indian character.
