Huawei will negotiate with Apple and Samsung to use 5G patents

March 31, 2021

Song Liuping, chief legal officer of Huawei, said on March 16, 2021 that the company will negotiate with Apple and Samsung to use 5G patents.

It is understood that Huawei will cap licensing fees at $2.50 for each phone that complies with 5G standards, and will offer a reasonable percentage of the price of the phone. Huawei insiders said the company would promise to charge lower rates than rivals such as Qualcomm, Ericsson and Nokia.

Of course, Huawei is not the only one to charge 5G patent fees worldwide. Before Huawei announced its 5G fee standard, Qualcomm has already announced its 5G patent fee standard, which is between 2.275% and 5%. For example, for a 5000 yuan mobile phone, Qualcomm will charge up to 250 yuan for the patent fee.

Ding Jianxin, head of Huawei's intellectual property department, said the company expects to earn between $1.2 billion and $1.3 billion in intellectual property revenue from 2019 to 2021.
