On April 21, 2021, according to a BBC report, French luxury brand Chanel has lost a trademark dispute with Huawei. The dispute began in 2017 when Huawei applied for approval to register its computer hardware trademark from the European Union's Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), the trade mark body. Chanel objected to the logo, which consists of two vertical semicircles intersecting each other, saying the design was similar to its "double C" logo.
The trademark office has since dismissed Chanel's objections in 2019, saying there are no similarities and that there is no possibility of confusion in the public mind. Chanel then challenged the ruling again in Luxembourg, which rejected its appeal in a ruling on Wednesday, with the EU's General Court ruling that the trademarks in question had some similarities but that their appearance differed greatly.
