On May 6, 2021, OPPO, a Chinese smart device company with increasing global presence, announced that it had become a licensor of the HEVC Advance Patent Pool. With this addition, OPPO’s HEVC/H.265 standard essential patents were included in the HEVC Advance patent portfolio license, which now totals over 13,700 worldwide patents and counting. Last January, another Chinese smart device maker Huawei was inducted by HEVC Advance as its patent pool’s licensor and licensee.
In October 2019, OPPO participated in the Media Coding Industry Forum (MC-IF) as one of the organization’s members, which include Intel, Ericsson, Tencent, etc. At the forum, OPPO revealed that it had been growing its patent portfolio of VVC/H.266 technology, a perfect companion to 5G.
As of March 2021, OPPO has filed for 61,000-plus patents as and granted 26,000-plus licenses worldwide. Beyond its constant focus on video codec technologies, OPPO has been striving to build a strong pool of patents to 5G telecommunications standards in over 20 countries and regions worldwide. And it has even filed for 2,450 AI patents.
