China Development Forum: IP of the Internet Innovation should be Protected

On March 23, the 2019 Sunshine Intellectual Property Forum, co-hosted by China Intellectual Property Law Asssociation and Intellectual Property Academy of Renmin University of China, was held in Beijing. Zhao Gang, deputy director of the State Intellectual Property Office, Wang Chuang, vice president of the Intellectual Property Court of the Supreme People's Court, Professor Liu Chuntian, president of the China Intellectual Property Law Association and other experts made in-depth discussion about topics like Intellectual Property Boosts Reform and Opening up, or Internet Innovation and Intellectual Property Protection to advise on   IP development and protection and high quality growth of the society.

According to Zhao Gang, China’s IP regime is improving thanks for the reform and opening-up policy. This regime which has  motivated fair competition and technological innovation, boosted high-quality economic growth and laid the foundation for further expanding reform and opening up and  strengthening IP protection constitutes an important part of China’s property rights regime and market competition order.

Professor Liu said that IP regime was the righteous choice that could protect innovation because without innovation or IP protection, high quality growth of new economy represented by the Internet industry would be empty.

At the sub-forum themed "Internet Innovation and Intellectual Property Protection", Tian Hui, vice president of the Guangzhou Internet Court, said that currently the new economy is emerging rapidly and IP protection needs to be strengthened. Since its establishment in 2018 as the first Internet court of China, Guangzhou Internet Court has heard many cases concerning Internet IP rights, covering 25 different fields, such as online news, music, video, literature and so on. It’s necessary for the court to upgrade its technology so as to analyze and apply big data, including both in-depth exploration of online copyrights ecology and analysis of different sectors such as pictures, music, films, novels, etc., to elaborate infringement standards.
