OLED Screen
Told by the KIPO Commissioner Park Won-joo, It is shown by the big data analysis on global technology patents that the number of OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) patents owned by China has already exceeded that of China. Moreover, it’s likely that the market share of Chinese OLED flat panels may exceed that of Korea in 5 to 10 years.
At present, the global market share owned by Korean OLED enterprises take up a great portion of 96.5%.
It’s analyzed by the KIPO that Korea may be threatened and will not sustain its present market share. Right now the number of newly-emerging OLED patents of China has already exceeded that of Korea significantly. On the domain of mini LED technology, which is expected to be the display technique for the next generation, the number of patents of Korea is also left behind by the US and China.
Similar cases used to happen in the area of LCD. 7 years after when Korean number of patents was surpassed by that of China, Korean leading market share of LCD was captured by China likewise.
The KIPO stated as well that the big data on patents contributes to the establishment of national industry strategy. It is possible to discover and invest patent vacuum areas and take IP strategies like global cooperation to survive in patent challenging areas in thus to grasp the industrial tendency trend by the means of data analysis.
According to KIPO’s statistics, even though Korean number of patent applications is still preceding most of other countries, its transformation efficiency is just one third of that of the US.
