A district court located in Florida, the US ordered each operator of 27 pirate websites to compensate USD 1 million to the media giant ABS-CBN. The latter won several lawsuits in the US this year. Those mentioned websites are mainly streaming media portal websites in small scales which provide related links of infringing the content stream of ABS-CBN.
The lawsuit was submitted in December 2018, particularly aimed at about 30 websites including dramaofw.ch, vidco.su, pinoyflixtv.com, pinoytvlovershd.com and tambayand.com. These websites attract users all over the world whose Filipino contents are specially used by pirate streaming media websites.
Despite facing great damage, none of the operators appeared in court, which constituted default judgement applied by ABS-CBN and was finally approved by judge William Dimitrouleas this week. In the judgement report, each defendant was ordered to compensate 1 million. Apart from this, four of them are additionally asked to pay a copyright infringement compensation of 30,000 USD.
The recent victory of ABS-CBN follows similar judgement patterns in recent years. The company has obtained compensation of millions of USD from several streaming media websites. In order to acquire more compensation, ABS-CBN also access the prohibition on advertisers of piracy websites including Google Adsense, RevenueHits and Popads whose immense incomes will be transmitted to ABS-CBN in one week. The permanent prohibition also demands the registers and registering institutions of websites of transferring their domain names to ABS-CBN.
