Dr. Marta Karczewicz, vice president of Qualcomm Technologies
It was announced by Qualcomm Technologies in San Diego on May 7 that Dr. Marta Karczewicz was nominated Lifetime Achievement for the European Inventor Award 2019 by the European Patent Office.
Dr. Marta Karczewicz, vice president of Qualcomm Technologies, is a pioneer in video compression technology, who owns nearly 400 patents globally. She mainly works on video coding and decoding, which is regarded as the basic technology to compress a large amount of original video data and to transmit through cellular networks. Her inventions have played important roles in several criteria for video compression such as AVC and HEVC.
“It’s not an exaggeration to say that the video transmission we enjoy every day wouldn’t be possible without Dr. Karczewicz’s inventions,” said Dr. Jim Thompson, executive vice engineering president and chief technology officer of Qualcomm. “Her nomination for this prestigious award is yet another validation of the value of Qualcomm’s basic technologies, and of the fact that our company employs world-class inventors.”
The European Inventor Award recognizes the contributions of outstanding European inventors whose inventions have made real contributions to technological progress and have improved people’s daily lives. The highly prestigious Lifetime Achievement category honors one single inventor whose long-term contributions and patented landmark inventions have had a major impact on his/her field of technology and society at large. Dr. Karczewicz is one of the three finalists for the award.
The award ceremony will take place on June 20, 2019, CET in Vienna, Austria. For more information, see EPO’s official website.
