Trish & Liu First Live Debate: IP Issues Highlighted

On the afternoon of May 29, it was published on the official Weibo of CGTN that because of the copyright, the live debate between CGTN anchor Liu Xin and Fox Business Network host Trish Regan would not be broadcasted. Here are the details about this debate.

On May 14, Trish vigorously trumpeted that the US should declare a trade war on China, after which CGTN released a short video comment entitled "China Will not Accept an Unequal Agreement." In the video, host Liu Xin forcefully refuted the remarks made by Tracy Reagan. The debate then extended to social media which attracted a lot of Internet users home and abroad.

After rounds of battle, a public debate on the Sino-US trade issues was agreed at 8 a.m. May 30, 2019, where Liu would join Regan’s Trish Regan Primetime via satellite in the CGTN studio located in Beijing.

This is the first debate between a Chinese host and an American host which is described as one of the historical moments of the TV history.

Here are the highlights of the discussion:

Liu Xin: I need to correct you. I am not a member of the Communist Party of China. I am here (on the show) to speak for myself as a CGTN anchor.

On trade talks

Trish Regan: What is your current assessment of where the trade talks are. Do you believe a deal is possible?

Liu Xin: The talks were not very successful last time, and both sides are considering where to go next. The Chinese government is very clear.

On intellectual property

Liu Xin: I do not deny there are copyright issues or piracy or even theft of commercial secrets — I think that has to be dealt with. There is a consensus among Chinese people that no country or individual can protect itself without intellectual property protection. Isolated cases do not mean that America is stealing or Chinese people are stealing.
