US Court Ordering Each of 27 Pirate Websites to Compensate USD 1 Million
websites
A district court located in Florida, the United States ordered each operator of 27 pirate websites to compensate USD 1 million to the media giant ABS-CBN. The latter won several lawsuits in the US this year. Aforementioned websites are mainly streaming media portal websites in small scales, providing related links that have infringed the content stream of ABS-CBN.
The lawsuit was submitted in December 2018, particularly aimed at about 30 domains including dramaofw.ch, vidco.su, pinoyflixtv.com, pinoytvlovershd.com and tambayand.com. These domains which attract users all over the world are used by streaming media websites which especially pirate Filipino contents
Despite facing great damage, none of the operators appeared in court, which constituted default judgment applied by ABS-CBN. The judgment was finally approved by judge William Dimitrouleas this week that each defendant was ordered to compensate USD 1 million. Apart from this, four of them are additionally ordered to pay a copyright infringement compensation of USD 30,000 .
The recent victory of ABS-CBN follows similar judgment patterns in recent years. The company has obtained compensations of millions of USD from several streaming media websites. ABS-CBN also access the prohibition against advertisers of piracy websites including Google Adsense, RevenueHits and Popads to acquire compensation, whose immense advertisement incomes will be transmitted to ABS-CBN in one week. The permanent prohibition also demands the domain registers and registering institutions of these websites to transfer their domains to ABS-CBN.
