CNN reported on May 29 that Apple acquired the patent for foldable screen that could be used on iPhone and other devices. USPTO approved the patent that described an electronic device with screen and case that are flexible and bendable .

This patent application was filed in January, 2018 and was also one of a series of applications that Apple filed for foldable screen. CNN pointed out that although companies like Apple would frequently apply for some patents, most of the application failed to be put into practice.

Daniel Ives, analyst from investment bank Wedbush Securities, said that “foldable screen and 5G represent the future trend of smart phones.” While interviewed by CNN, he replied that Apple had been skeptical for years though there had been rumors of phones with foldable screen since 2017.

In the past, Apply filed another patent for flexible screen with touchable sensors. This screen could be opened and closed like a book. Moreover, Apple also patented for a flexible iPhone which could fold in half and grip on clothes.

Ives agreed that this new patent was of great significance because it showed that foldable phones had become part of Apple’s roadmap for product design. It was possible that Apple could unveil its foldable smart phone at the end of 2020 or at the beginning of 2021.

At the beginning of 2019, Samsung released the Galaxy Fold with a price of USD 2000. Samsung delayed its sale after screen malfunctions. Huawei also unveiled a foldable phone priced at USD 2600.

Recently, the report published by CNBC shows that currently, customers are not interested enough in foldable phones but are expecting 5G networks.
