15.2 Trillion Yuan! 5G to Promote China’s Digital Economy
It was expected to start the commercial use of 5G in September this year. From August 26 to 29, 2019 Smart China Expo would be held in Chongqing, and 5G undoubtedly became the hottest topic with the greatest attention. It was also a subject that academicians, professors and industry leaders talked about most in such forums as Globalized Digital Economy 100 Forum, 5G Intelligent Future Summit, Smart IoT and Industry Empowerment Summit. This showed that China's advantages in 5G development had been recognized by the industry.
Han Xia, director of the Information and Communications Administration under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), said at the 5G Intelligent Future Summit hosted by Chongqing Communications Administration and China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) that China's 5G commercial use got off to a good start. Nowadays, 5G plus industrial Internet and the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) made great breakthroughs, and more than one hundred 5G innovative application scenarios were created in various industries, including transportation and medical treatment. In terms of equipment management, as of the end of July this year, MIIT had issued 7 approvals for 5G equipment to access network and 370,000 network access licenses. Besides, many breakthroughs were made in 5G key technologies.
Wang Zhiqin, deputy director of CAICT, said that according to CAICT’s calculations, 5G was expected to boost China's digital economy by 15.2 trillion Yuan from 2020 to 2025. The integration and development of 5G with new ICT technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and big data would bring profound changes to digital economy’s production organization methods, resource allocation efficiency and service management models. All provinces in the country were promoting 5G development, and focusing on integration application. As of July this year, provinces and cities nationwide including Chongqing had issued altogether 35 5G-relevant documents. In terms of 5G applications going forward, cloud multimedia, smart medical treatment, industrial Internet and IoV would be prioritized.
5G would deliver profound changes to the global industry, and the opportunity for future development of 5G was in China, said Joe Weinma, strategist for 5G digital transformation and author of Cloudonomics. 5G would provide great opportunities for the digitalization of the global industry and give rise to more new products, he added. Besides, he was very optimistic about the application prospect of 5G in China as the country already had relevant development and implementation plans.
