Marvel Once Again "Lost" Spiderman-Sony Disney Copyright Cooperation Collapsed

US time August 20, Disney and Sony disagreed on problems about Spiderman’s copyright. When the existing contract ends, Sony will no longer continue the contract with Disney. In addition, Sony is now officially “broken up” with Marvel movies and has announced that Marvel movies and Marvel movies’ CEO Kevin Fitch will no longer making the new Spiderman movie. Sony claims that they are disappointed by Disney’s decision but respect it at the same time. In Sony’s claim, it emphasizes that Spiderman’s IP is their own IP, “We hope that the situation can be improved, but right now we understand that Disney has put more responsibility on Kevin and will not give him time to do work that does not own the IP. Kevin Fitch was great, we are thankful for the help and instructions that he offered and we will keep on the good work.”

Until now, the movie released on July this year has reached a box office of 11 billion US dollars, becoming Sony movies’ new global box office champion. Disney hopes that the future Spider-Man movies will be "five-fifth split" between Sony and Disney, and has discussed extending this approach to other movies in Sony's Spider-Man Universe. Sony's attitude towards this proposal is to refuse directly and to maintain the status quo: Disney can take 5% of the gross revenue from Spider-Man movies. Disney rejected such a meagre business return.

According to the contract, Tom Holland will still be starring in Sony’s Spiderman movies.

Scholar Mubai, who has always been devoted himself in Marvel culture studies tells the reporter that Sony attaches great importance to Spiderman film and television adaptations that they have in hands. “As the time that cooperation begins, public has interpreted it that the derivative products’ success only makes it even harder for Disney to take the copyright back. Sony didn’t want to completely rely on Marvel Universe to make Spiderman big. There will be many following discussions about the Spiderman contract and obviously that is beneficial to Disney.” If “Spidey” really quits the Marvel Universe, according to his contract, he will still be starring in Sony’s Spiderman. However, currently, Sony’s claim has not mentioned about the future of Holland’s version of Spiderman and has not directly answer whether he will quit the Marvel Universe. It is still under negotiation.
